My Whale Hunt is the true-life story of Chuck Christensen’s daring whale hunt. Soon after moving to Wales, Alaska, to teach school in the small native village, Chuck looks out over the Bering Strait and wonders why no one in the village is hunting whale. He is saddened that the village, which is so dependent on meat, isn’t using the whale. A very avid hunter, Chuck begins to enthusiastically send letters, read books, and sketch diagrams of harpoon placements. Meanwhile, he dreams of the whale hunt. At this time he has only been in the village a few months and has only been hunting seal on the shore ice. He doesn’t have his own boat or crew and is an outsider. But skepticism will not deter him as he continues with his dream. His plans are soon interrupted with a warning to stop his illegal activity, stating that a non-native cannot hunt whale. Chuck is left torn as he weighs out his hope for the village to start whaling against the legality of hunting whale.
